Fix Roku App Wi-Fi Connection Problems

A good network connection is a prerequisite to access and stream videos to your Roku device. Ideally, the Roku player connects to the home network through a wireless connection to the router. The broadband service provided by the internet service provider receives signals from the router to connect to the internet.
Having said so, there are times that you might experience connection issues during regular use. Incidentally, it can also happen that you have been able to connect to the Wi-Fi, have passed green on all the Roku connection tests and the signal seems rather strong too. But randomly, none of the apps are able to connect to the streaming service. For example, messages such as ‘We’re having problems connecting to our servers’ may appear from Hulu; Netflix will display an error NW-2-5 etc.

Fix Roku App Wi-Fi Connection Problems

Ideally, 90% of the Roku issues whether you are unable to load something or you find that there are some glitches while streaming – can be fixed in just two steps:
Step 1:
  • Check your wireless router - if it is working properly and if it is plugged in correctly
  • Go to ‘Settings’ and choose ‘Network
  • You will arrive at a page that has all your wireless connection information on it
  • The ‘Status’ will indicate if the device is connected or not; if there is no connectivity, it will show ‘Not Connected’
  • Check the ‘Signal Strength’ if it is displayed as ‘Excellent’
Step 2:
  • Go back to the ‘Settings’ page
  • Scroll down all the options and click on ‘System
  • On the ‘System’ page click on ‘Restart
  • Restarting the Roku will remove any bugs or glitches from it.
If have tried both the above steps and have attempted other options too such as resetting the Roku, restarting the Wi-Fi router, changing the DNS servers and also disabling the 802.11n and using the 802.11g – and if none of these has worked, then you can do the following fix.
Repair the wireless encryption to obtain the support of a stronger encryption, at better speeds. In the case where your encryption is WPA2-PSK with AES then AES is definitely a strong encryption and supports802.11n which is a high speed.

At the same time, if you are using a Roku streaming stick, then you might be able to connect to the Wi-Fi but the Roku apps will fail to recognize a connection. Try using AES/TKIP to support both encryptions, you will still face a problem. Instead, disable the AES and use only TKIP. This encryption is weak and limits the Wi-Fi speed to 802.11g at 54Mbps but will allow the apps to connect to the streaming service.

Each wireless router has to be configured differently and you will also have to get the IP address of the router along with the login credentials to effect the change.
